When I was seventeen, a high school
photography course transformed my life. In a few short weeks, I went from trying to endure the last years of my education to breaking into the school to use the darkroom. Within a few months I had a small arsenal of cameras and a darkroom and a lifetime dream of creating photographs.
I studied photography, worked as a photojournalist and earned a degree in fine arts from the University of Hartford Art School. To complete my education I had the good fortune to work as Jack McConnell's first assistant. I was greatly impressed by Jack's style and work ethic and I learned just as much about the business of photography from his partner, Paula MacNamara.
After four years of assisting I graduated Magna Cum something or other and accepted a position at Gerber Scientific as their first staff photographer. Within a few months I was shooting ads and brochures to market hi-tech factory automation equipment. Within a year Gerber was a rising star on Wall Street and I was shooting the annual report and generating cover illustrations for trade publications featuring Gerber's products. I competed for the chance to shoot many assignments, and it often meant working long hours after plant closing to achieve the result I was looking for.
